The final site meeting for Area 5 was held on the 23rd June. Lucie Hawkins from North Yorkshire County Council and Neil Redfern from English Heritage reviewed the excavations and discussed the project. It was generally agreed that the landscape model used to determine the extent of the excavation was working well.

With the fieldwork being completed to everyone’s satisfaction, Area 5 was signed off and handed over to the quarry to begin extraction. The minutes from the site meeting can be accessed here.

An assessment report will now be completed for Area 4 and 5 and will published on the website as soon as it is available. The next phase of sitework will be in the strip map and sample area to the north of Area 5. It is anticipated that this will take place later this year.

The work in Area 5 has now been completed. A core sample of the large sink hole located toward the northern end of the site was taken on Thursday with the assistance of Durham University. The sampling recovered a sequence of peat over 3.5m long. A meeting is due to be held with representatives of English Heritage and North Yorkshire County Council to review the site works and sign off Area 5. As usual the minutes of the meeting will be posted on this web site. A plan of the soil features recorded in the work is available to view as a pdf file.
